Magnum Manila: Salty Regret

I’m about to tell you a story of salty regret.

A Magnum is basically a type of luxury ice cream sold in the supermarkets. It’s made with Belgian chocolate and all the works. Personally, I like Magnum ice creams – especially the dark chocolate one with almonds. Anyways, Magnum opens up these little pop-up shops in different countries wherein you can make your own Magnum bars with your choice of toppings. When it opened here in the Philippines, people went crazy for it.

I know the hype for Magnum Manila is pretty down already, but I never really got the opportunity to try it until recently. I was in the area when I decided “today is the day I’m going to try this thing”. I went up to the store in Mall of Asia and my eyebrows raised a bit when I saw the price (I mean, I could buy almost 3 regular Magnums with that price).

(“Naked Magnum” really? HAHA)

I still decided to go for it since I knew it would be some kind of experience on way or another.

Sophie Bakes: Chocolate Chip Melon Pan

[Maybe a more fitting title would be Sophie TRIES to Bake Again: Chocolate Chip Melon Pan]

A few weeks ago, I discovered this channel on YouTube called Peaceful Cuisine which is basically a cooking and baking channel dedicated to fill your eyes and ears with quiet cooking (I find it incredibly relaxing) – but not your stomach, unfortunately. There was this one video that captured my attention: Chocolate Chip Melon Pan. Melon pans, in general, are really good. [A melon pan is basically a sweet bread with crisp cookie dough on top.] I always buy one whenever I go to a Japanese bakeshop here in the Philippines and I make it a point to eat one whenever I visit the Land of the Rising Sun. It’s one of my ultimate comfort foods.

Just look at it!

I absolutely love Japanese food so when I saw “Melon Pan” I immediately clicked on the video – and the fact that it had chocolate chips? I knew that I had to eat it. I’m sure that everyone has this thing they do wherein they watch people cook or bake online, drool at the thought the final product, but end up never really making it for themselves because of laziness or other excuses? Well, I’m usually like that, but for some strange reason I wanted to make Chocolate Chip Melon Pans. I grabbed some paper and wrote down all the ingredients I had to buy.

Bienvenue aux Philippines! (Welcome to the Philippines!)

Last week (October 6 – 9, 2016), my good friend Tiffany visited the Philippines! (If you don’t remember her – I mentioned her in a few of my previous blog posts – here is one of them! I met her when I was doing my exchange program in Japan!) We were so excited – and after weeks of planning, this is what we did while she was here (in my perspective)!

October 6, 2016 (Thursday):

(Well – I’m gonna start by saying that she had her first meal in Jollibee, HAHA!) (She liked it!)

(I didn’t take a photo huhu)

October 7, 2016 (Friday):

On her first “official” whole day here, we went museum hopping! First, we attempted to go to the school museum (long story):

(so close, yet so far)

 – then, we headed for the National Museum! (I’m so proud of her HAHA we commuted going there!)

We both thought that this painting was really pretty and it accurately told the story of how cloth is weaved!

We bust out laughing when we saw his face – HAHA

These faces, I swear – were so funny. The past behind these faces isn’t as funny, though.

Japan 2k16 – Week 11 (June 13 – June 19)

According to my planner, June 13 – 19 was Palindrome Week! Thanks to my incredible memory, I had to research on what a palindrome is again.

“A palindrome is a word, phrase, number, or other sequences of characters which reads the same backward or forward. Allowances may be made for adjustments to capital letters, punctuation, and word dividers.” (Reference)

or

a word, line, verse, number, sentence, etc., reading the same backward as forward, as Madam, I’m Adam or Poor Dan is in a droop.” (Reference)

Anyways – back to the blog!

Day 1: June 13

Today, my mom and brother will be flying back to the Philippines – unfortunately, I wasn’t able to see them anymore because I had classes. It was raining really hard today, so I felt really lazy to go home (I just wanted to stay under a roof and eat something warm). Thankfully, I only had one class today.

Winona (she’s dismissed the same time I am usually) and I were literally in front of the train when we decided – right then and there – to go to Sweets Paradise; for two reasons – one, we were hungry and it was lunchtime, and two – Sweets Paradise in Shinjuku had an Osomatsusan (おそ松さん) collaboration. Naturally, we had to go.

If you’re not familiar with Sweets Paradise, it’s basically a buffet where they have a huge range of sweets up for eats! Aside from sweets, they also have salad, curry, pizza, and pasta – and of course, drinks. You can check out their menu and the prices here.

Japan 2k16 – Week 4 (April 25 – April 30)

Hello, everyone! I hope you’ll enjoy reading this as I had a fun time writing and experiencing these events (especially Sunday)! 🙂

Day 1: April 25

Today I finally check off something from my “Things I Must Do in Japan” list, and that’s going to Shirohige’s Cream Puff Factory – home to the Totoro cream puffs!

After school, Winona and I went to Shimokitazawa (this place is heaven, by the way). We were so happy since it’s literally a few stations away from the dorm!

After walking around for a couple of minutes, we finally found the small sign that leads to the famous cream puff store!

It’s actually really hidden, so you need to have sharp eyes!
20160425_121556
YES.

The first floor is actually the cream puff store, and the second floor is their restaurant (and bakery for other bread). You can order cream puffs and eat it on the second floor!

When we went in, we were immediately greeted by a really cute sign and Totoro merch everywhere!

I mean, just look at them! Ahhh!

The flavors for this specific month are chocolate cream, strawberry cream, original (vanilla), and banana caramel cream.

My 18th Birthday

So, what else did I miss talking about?

Aside from going to Color Manila Run earlier last month, I celebrated my 18th (yey, legality! I can now sign more documents and join more giveaways) birthday last February 10. I’m the type of girl who would prefer not to have a debut, so instead, I got together some of my closest / best friends and went to my (2nd) favorite mall – Trinoma ❤

I decided that since we’re all girls (yey for girl’s day out) we’d eat somewhere that would scream: “this is very cute and you will feel like a lady eating here” – what better place than the Vanilla Cupcake Bakery?

Unfortunately, I was not able to take much photos (since I do prefer to live in the moment at times rather than take photos of everything) BUT here are some photos from last year when my friends and I ate there:

Their interior is definitely very cozy and cute, which is the perfect place for a get-together with the gals. Their food is delicious and their cupcakes are yummy (though I always order their cake jars instead of cupcakes) plus the price is just right.

Whenever I eat there (last month was my second or third time to really eat from the menu instead of just sweets), I order their bangus ala pobre (or milkfish in English). It’s really good and filling! Their rice has a small taste of sweetness to it, which really adds to the flavor.

I’m Back + Color Manila Run 2k16

I know, I know.

It’s been almost a month (or even longer, I think) since I’ve last updated BUT I do have very good reasons for why I’ve not been as active! First of all, school. I’ve been juggling my school work, org work, and other duties altogether. Second, I’m preparing for something amazing that’s happening next month (which I will reveal very soon)! Lastly, finals week (for me, at least) is coming up and I’ve been incredibly busy.

The reason why I decided to post now, though? I’ve missed writing for myself — and actually just finished watching a movie with one of my best friends, Nicole; it’s called Stuck in Love and it was released 2012. It’s easily one of my new favorite movies because the protagonists are writers so it pretty much inspired me to take a break and write again!

Before I start talking about the second part of the blog, which you can already tell from the title (hint: Color Manila Run), I would just like to share my recap from February!

12794540_1150803474930068_7530455328801286959_n
I decided to start doing this monthly for reflection and for me to practice on my lettering! 🙂

Anywho, on to the second part of the blog post – Color Manila Run!

Earlier this month, on the 6th of March, my best friend Courtney and I went to Color Manila Run for the first time! Imagine this: colored powder, awesome music, running / walking, obstacle courses, and lots of laughs!

12814152_10205967886334501_3040183379606590078_n
So this is Courtney (right) and I (left) at the finish line!

The night before, she slept over at my house (but we didn’t sleep oops) where we caught up and played loads of board games and card games (she studies in a different university). We left my house at 3 in the morning (!!) to make it to Mall of Asia by 4 in the morning, which was the call time. What surprised us was that there were so many people already at wee hours in the morning (also that from my house in Valenzuela City to Pasay City – it took around 30 to 40 minutes only)! While waiting for the fun run to start, we went around the booths and hoarded on free samples and freebies (most of them were sun screen, which I was happy about since two of my favorite brands – Daylong and Biorè were there)!
