Sophie Bakes: Chocolate Chip Melon Pan

[Maybe a more fitting title would be Sophie TRIES to Bake Again: Chocolate Chip Melon Pan]

A few weeks ago, I discovered this channel on YouTube called Peaceful Cuisine which is basically a cooking and baking channel dedicated to fill your eyes and ears with quiet cooking (I find it incredibly relaxing) – but not your stomach, unfortunately. There was this one video that captured my attention: Chocolate Chip Melon Pan. Melon pans, in general, are really good. [A melon pan is basically a sweet bread with crisp cookie dough on top.] I always buy one whenever I go to a Japanese bakeshop here in the Philippines and I make it a point to eat one whenever I visit the Land of the Rising Sun. It’s one of my ultimate comfort foods.

Just look at it!

I absolutely love Japanese food so when I saw “Melon Pan” I immediately clicked on the video – and the fact that it had chocolate chips? I knew that I had to eat it. I’m sure that everyone has this thing they do wherein they watch people cook or bake online, drool at the thought the final product, but end up never really making it for themselves because of laziness or other excuses? Well, I’m usually like that, but for some strange reason I wanted to make Chocolate Chip Melon Pans. I grabbed some paper and wrote down all the ingredients I had to buy.

Breakfast at Maginhawa x Breakout Philippines

A few weeks ago, I met up with some of my friends – we started our day with some brunch at Theo’s Café!

As soon as we saw the tarp saying “Now Serving Breakfast”, we knew that we were going to end up eating here.

Pardon, four hungry girls coming in!

Need to come back one of these days to eat these.

MMMMMMM.
20161023_103524
Since it IS breakfast time, it would only make sense to eat something “breakfasty”.

I ordered the Waffle + Bacon + Egg – which tasted so good! The waffle is soft and had a creamy taste, the bacon is just the right balance of crunchy and chewy (with the right tad of sweetness), and the egg is done just the way I like it (sunny side up with a runny yolk). On top of it all, it also came with free coffee!

Look at that beauty.

Wildflour Cafe + Bakery

[Note: This is a really late blog post. I had scheduled this to be out by September 10, 2016 – but I forgot to post it!  😦 haha whoops.]

Every Sunday, my family and I go to the Sunday market to have a delicious breakfast and to buy some food for the house. This particular Sunday was special because we were celebrating my dad’s birthday – we had breakfast at the Wildflour Cafe + Bakery in Makati.

It was my first time to go here so I was really impressed by the interior and the food displayed as soon as I walked in. We were immediately seated and handed menus (you can view the menu here).

We ended up ordering the following: the pastry board (Php 420) – choice of any four pastries;

Here are the four pastries: (L-R) Salted Egg Croissant & Ube Cake

(L-R): Smores Pie & (I forgot what the other one is called)

Louie-Luis Ice Cream Sandwich

The other day I went to Alabang Town Center to meet my relatives (as they live near there). We were going to have coffee and snacks somewhere so we could all talk and catch up when we bumped into this:

Louis-Luis Ice Cream Sandwiches!

Of course, all my little cousins were excited and asked for ice cream. We settled down in a nearby restaurant while the others ordered for us. I was watching my cousins while they were ordering and ran back to the stall when I received my ice cream.

It’s pretty affordable for a good ice cream sandwich!

BLK 513!

After several months, I was finally able to try BLK 513! I first heard about this store when they first opened in SM Megamall – unfortunately, I live far from there so I never really got the chance to go. It was pure luck that a branch opened up in SM North Edsa, which is nearer where I live.

My aunt and I were going to watch a film that day (Ang Babaeng Humayo) when I noticed that across the cinema area was BLK 513! Long story short, my aunt and I went to get some frozen yogurt.

20161001_160847
Prices start at Php 170 for the dark skim cone (which comes with two toppings) and Php 185 for the dark skim cup (which comes with one crunch, two fruits, and one sauce).

Japan 2k16 – Week 11 (June 13 – June 19)

According to my planner, June 13 – 19 was Palindrome Week! Thanks to my incredible memory, I had to research on what a palindrome is again.

“A palindrome is a word, phrase, number, or other sequences of characters which reads the same backward or forward. Allowances may be made for adjustments to capital letters, punctuation, and word dividers.” (Reference)

or

a word, line, verse, number, sentence, etc., reading the same backward as forward, as Madam, I’m Adam or Poor Dan is in a droop.” (Reference)

Anyways – back to the blog!

Day 1: June 13

Today, my mom and brother will be flying back to the Philippines – unfortunately, I wasn’t able to see them anymore because I had classes. It was raining really hard today, so I felt really lazy to go home (I just wanted to stay under a roof and eat something warm). Thankfully, I only had one class today.

Winona (she’s dismissed the same time I am usually) and I were literally in front of the train when we decided – right then and there – to go to Sweets Paradise; for two reasons – one, we were hungry and it was lunchtime, and two – Sweets Paradise in Shinjuku had an Osomatsusan (おそ松さん) collaboration. Naturally, we had to go.

20160613_113404

If you’re not familiar with Sweets Paradise, it’s basically a buffet where they have a huge range of sweets up for eats! Aside from sweets, they also have salad, curry, pizza, and pasta – and of course, drinks. You can check out their menu and the prices here.

Japan 2k16 – Week 10 (June 6 – June 12)

The Japan blog continues! 🙂

Day 1: June 6

After a fun (but tiring) weekend, we embrace the start of the week with a test (boo). Luckily, according to the flowchart and exam schedule, this week would be pretty chill – so we went out a lot.

Day 2: June 7

Today, the only thing due in school were some paperwork for one of my classes – so yey! I went back to the dorm right after to sleep and clean my room.

Day 3: June 8

Winona, Pam, and I planned on going to Ueno Zoo – but due to time restraints, we changed our plans instead and went on a mini-food trip, haha! It was around lunch time when we headed to Tokyo station after our classes. Tokyo Station is an interesting place to stop by when you’re in Tokyo – since the station is filled with shops (you don’t even have to get out of the station)! We decided to hit Ramen Street first to eat the best ramen there. After some research and debate, we lined up at Rokurinsha (六厘舎) – which is known to have the longest lines (you can check out their menu here – it’s in Japanese though, so use Google translate). Luckily, we arrived before the lunch crowd, so we only had to wait approximately 30 minutes. The store is relatively small, so it only seats about twenty people.

20160608_135648

This ramen shop is known for its tsukemen (つけめん) noodle dish (it’s a type of Japanese noodle dish in which you dip the noodles in a bowl of very thick soup first, then you eat it). To learn more about the difference between tsukemen and ramen, you can read about it here.

We all ordered the original tsukemen dish – which cost us just ¥850! The dish arrived really quickly, and before you know it, we were stuffing our faces with one of the best noodle dishes I’ve ever eaten. This is the first time I’ve eaten tsukemen, and I’m happy to know that the dish lived up to the hype.

We were really full – the fullest we’ve ever felt, and that’s saying a lot; BUT the food trip must continue.

Japan 2k16 – Week 7 (May 16 – May 22)

Yes, yes. It’s been a quite a long time and I’m really sorry about that! I’ve been so busy these past few weeks – busy exploring Tokyo and the weight of school, of course; but now I’m taking the time to update on my exchange program here! 🙂 I hope you enjoy reading as much as I had recollecting these memories!

Day 1: May 16

Today was a very ordinary day in school. I went through the usual routine of going to school, having Japanese class, then going back to the dorm to rest and do homework – BUT there’s a good reason why I didn’t go out today.

Day 2: May 17

Today, I was supposed to go to the Louis Vuitton exhibit near the school but decided not to anymore as the weather was terrible. It was raining really hard the whole day, so after school, I asked Winona: “Hey. Do you want to have doughnuts and coffee and wait for the rain to stop?”, whereas she agreed. We went to Krispy Kreme in Shinjuku (near Toho Cinema) and did just that. Now, there was a Taito station near the doughnut shop so I wandered inside and saw a giant Snoopy stuffed toy inside one of the UFO machines.

I didn’t believe that I would win something like that – but then:

20160517_173148

I WON. Winona and I were laughing so hard because our faces mirrored the same expression like: “WOW. I ACTUALLY WON. I GUESS I’M NOT THAT MUCH OF A LOSER AFTER ALL.” HAHA.

The day pretty much brightened up afterwards – both figuratively and literally.

Japan 2k16 – Week 4 (April 25 – April 30)

Hello, everyone! I hope you’ll enjoy reading this as I had a fun time writing and experiencing these events (especially Sunday)! 🙂

Day 1: April 25

Today I finally check off something from my “Things I Must Do in Japan” list, and that’s going to Shirohige’s Cream Puff Factory – home to the Totoro cream puffs!

After school, Winona and I went to Shimokitazawa (this place is heaven, by the way). We were so happy since it’s literally a few stations away from the dorm!

After walking around for a couple of minutes, we finally found the small sign that leads to the famous cream puff store!

20160425_121540
It’s actually really hidden, so you need to have sharp eyes!
20160425_121556
YES.
20160425_121615
The first floor is actually the cream puff store, and the second floor is their restaurant (and bakery for other bread). You can order cream puffs and eat it on the second floor!
20160425_130017
When we went in, we were immediately greeted by a really cute sign and Totoro merch everywhere!

I mean, just look at them! Ahhh!

The flavors for this specific month are chocolate cream, strawberry cream, original (vanilla), and banana caramel cream.

Japan 2k16 – (April 16 to April 17)

As I’ve mentioned in my previous post, I will be creating a separate blog post for April 16 – 17 since a LOT has happened and if I did place it in the previous post, it would make it too long. ANYWAYS —

I went to Lake Kawaguchiko (near Mt. Fuji) with my uncle and his family and attended the Cherry Blossom Festival!

On the way there!
13009769_1181764491833966_1702067623_o
We stopped by the station to ride another bus that takes us directly to the lake / festival and I saw these cookies! They are so cute – shaped like little Mt. Fujis!

I bought a box of 10 assorted cookies to share with my friends in the dorm 🙂

These were the flavors inside the box! Personally, my favorites were strawberry, earl grey, and chocolate!
